Tesla Powerwall 3 Whole-Home Backup in Utah: 100A, 200A and 400A Homes

Last reviewed: 2026-08-29 · Reviewed by Mike Morris, Founder, Ask Solar Mike

Whole-home backup comes down to three numbers, and Ask Solar Mike sizes every Utah design around them: continuous power, motor-start capability, and your main service rating . One Tesla Powerwall 3 delivers 11.5 kW of continuous power with a 48 A maximum continuous current and a 185 LRA load-start rating, per Tesla's public datasheet . In practice, one unit is commonly a whole-home design for 100 A services, one to two units cover most 200 A homes, and 400 A estates are designed as split systems with multiple units and gateways . Every system design is produced and reviewed by a licensed engineering firm . Here is the sizing logic, in plain English.

Two Tesla Powerwall 3 units installed side by side on an exterior wall

What actually decides whole-home versus partial backup?

Two ratings, not one . Continuous power is what the battery can carry all evening — Powerwall 3's datasheet rates each unit at 11.5 kW and a 48 A maximum continuous current . Motor start is the brief, much larger demand when a compressor or pump kicks on — the datasheet's load-start capability figure is 185 LRA . A design that only checks the first number will stumble on the second the first hot afternoon of an outage . The third input is your service rating — 100 A, 200 A or 400 A — because it sets the gateway layout and how much of the panel can island at once .

Is one Powerwall 3 enough for a 100 A home?

Usually the design conversation is short here: a 100 A service physically limits how much the home can draw, and a single Powerwall 3's 48 A of continuous current covers a large share of what a 100 A panel realistically runs at once . The gateway islands the whole panel; nothing gets left off a subpanel . What still needs checking on site: electric heat, well pumps and older compressors with high locked-rotor demands . A site-specific quote and load review are required .

What about the standard 200 A Utah home?

Most Utah homes we review are 200 A, and they split two ways . Gas-heated homes with one air conditioner often island the whole panel on a single Powerwall 3, letting the 185 LRA start rating handle the compressor . All-electric homes — heat pump, electric range, EV charging, hot tub — usually move to two units, which doubles both continuous current and stored energy, or to one unit plus load management that sheds the biggest circuits during an outage . Runtime is the other reason to add a unit: capacity stacks at 13.5 kWh per Powerwall 3, and solar keeps recharging it through the outage via the integrated inverter .

How do 400 A and dual-panel estates get backed up?

Larger Utah homes — and this is the segment Ask Solar Mike focuses on — typically bring 400 A service split across two 200 A panels . The design pattern is a split system: each panel gets its own islanding point, with Tesla's supported devices being the Gateway 3, Backup Switch and Backup Gateway 2 per the datasheet, and Powerwall 3 units allocated to each side of the service . The datasheet supports up to four Powerwall 3 units, plus up to three expansion units when the need is more stored energy rather than more power . These layouts are exactly where an engineered design earns its keep — every system design is produced and reviewed by a licensed engineering firm .

When do you need a second (or third) Powerwall 3?

Add units for one of two reasons: power or runtime . Power, when simultaneous loads — two HVAC compressors, a well pump, an EV — push past one unit's continuous rating . Runtime, when the home's overnight draw would drain 13.5 kWh before sunrise . Solar changes the runtime math: each Powerwall 3 accepts up to 20 kW DC of solar on six MPPTs, so a well-sized array refills the battery while the grid is still down .

What stays on during an outage?

In a whole-home layout: everything behind the gateway — furnace blower, fridge and freezers, well pump, internet, garage doors, lighting — subject to the continuous and motor-start limits above . In a partial layout, the backed-up subpanel carries the chosen circuits and the rest waits for the grid . The honest sizing step is a load review of your actual panel schedule, not a rule of thumb from a blog post — ours included .

The layouts described here are illustrative, not engineering documents . Your stamped design comes from your own site review — every system design is produced and reviewed by a licensed engineering firm . A site-specific quote and load review are required .
